thank god it's over. it's been nothing but pacing and panting and general animal anxiety around here for two days straight. yesterday I decided to opt out on gallivanting plans and instead plant myself at home with a good read (stardust, neil gaiman)-- and I'm glad I did. I was really worried about poor mister george, afraid that all the accumulated stress might just actually cause him to keel over at any moment. last night when it had reached a very chaotic pitch and didn't seem likely to abate anytime soon, and we'd been dealing with it all day (and all the night and the day before), I finally got up, closed all the windows, and turned on the a.c. and some sarah mclachlan. what's more soothing? george was already pretty much in my lap by that point-- I know it's bad when he wants up on the couch and the bed, since he refuses unless there's something freaking him out. the cats were pretty jumpy and vocal, too. next year I'm either getting sedatives from the vet or else taking george and heading for the boondocks for the fourth. no. fireworks. this year's experience in chicago was just too intense. city folk like to make a lot of noise.
